What is Heart Pine?

Heart Pine is the heartwood of the Southern Pine family of trees, primarily Longleaf, Shortleaf and Loblolly. Heartwood begins to develop after twenty year's growth. It extends from the pith, or center, of the tree to the sapwood (pale color wood next to the bark). Its classic amber to reddish-brown color comes from resins, gums and other natural compounds within the tree that will darken over time when exposed to light.

Where Does Heart Pine Originate Today?

Our Heart Pine is selectively harvested in the Southeastern United States from managed Southern Pine plantations, many of which employ new forestry management techniques. In addition to expanding the availability of this renewable resource, these techniques recreate a forest's ecosystem at the time of early European settlement providing habitat for many species of plants and wildlife that are threatened or endangered. We strive to adhere to sustainable Forestry practices and responsible stewardship of all Natural Resources.

Historical Significance

Due to its abundant supply, superior strength, natural decay resistance and durability, Heart Pine became the desired construction material of Colonial America. Heart Pine floors were found in rustic Frontier cabins as well as gracious Plantations.

By the middle 1900's, the average age and size of timber had decreased which affected the availability of Heart Pine. Today, with an increasing emphasis on environmental awareness, timber management groups are focusing their long term goals on the preservation, growth and supply of Heart Pine. Its availability has increased so that it is now the preferred flooring for period restorations, residential and commercial constructions.
